Client Spotlight: Today is a Good Day

When life experiences become catalysts for good

It’s not every day that the folks at Grimm & Grove get to partner with a nonprofit that inspires us on a daily basis. But Today Is a Good Day is doing the work day-in and day-out to help families who often have nowhere else to turn for help. Founded by Martha Benedum Sharkey, the nonprofit provides families with children in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with much needed financial, social, and personal support.

Martha knows firsthand how scary and overwhelming it is to be faced with medical uncertainty during the most vulnerable days of a baby’s life. In 2010, she and her husband welcomed identical twin girls at 23 weeks who were admitted to the NICU. One of their daughters, Mary, died 14 days later. Claire, who was less than a pound at one point during her NICU stay, not only survived her 103 days in the NICU but is today a healthy teenager with a passion for theater and performance.

Four years later, Martha turned this traumatic event into Today is a Good Day. The name reflects her family’s approach to managing their NICU experience—taking each day as it comes and celebrating even the smallest wins along the way. And then there’s the tagline: Helping families navigate the NICU journey, one miracle at a time.

It’s rare to come across a company, let alone a mission-based nonprofit, that’s  built a brand that lives up to its name, tagline, logo, and mission so perfectly, and so compassionately. For families struggling during the NICU experience, the emotional attributes of hope and joy – paired with the tangible benefit of financial assistance – couldn’t be anymore clear.
